June 7: Fly to Houston and overnight flight to Istanbul, Turkey

June 8-9: Istanbul (mosques, palace, Turkish bath, sunset river cruise, market)

June 10: Overnight flight to Johannesburg, South Africa

June 10-13: Johannesburg (spend time with Tammy’s SA family, Soweto tour, Apartheid Museum)

June 14: Fly to Windhoek, Namibia

June 15-17: Sesriem, Namibia (Namib Desert: Deadvlei, Sossusvlei, hiking, hot air balloon)

June 18: Fly to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in South Africa

June 18-21: Sabi Sand Nature Reserve (morning and evening game drives, “safari”)

June 21-22: Drive across South Africa heading to KwaZulu-Natal (explore along the way)

June 23-26: Zingela (time with Tammy’s family, hiking)

June 26-28: Cathedral Peak (hiking, nature)

June 28-29: Howick (South African braai with Tammy’s other SA relatives)

June 29: Drive back to Johannesburg

June 30-July 2: Fly to Livingstone, Zambia (walk across Zimbabwe border to see Victoria Falls, Zambezi river cruise, Chobe National Park in Botswana—day trip and river safari)

July 3-6: Fly to Cape Town, South Africa (stay with Tammy’s SA family, Table Mountain, Robben Island tour, Boulders Beach)

July 7-9: Drive to George, South Africa (stay with Tammy’s SA family, see George and nearby area)

July 10-11: Fly to Johannesburg, fly to Istanbul, fly to Chicago, fly to Indy


Prayer Requests:

·        For all of us to stay healthy and safe on the trip

·        For all of our flights to get us where we need to be, especially for time-sensitive situations

·        For our luggage to not get lost or stolen (this is common in Africa)

We got up at 7 and got ready. We went to breakfast at 8. I had fruit and yogurt, scrambled eggs, toast, juice, and coffee. As soon as we were done, the others were ready to leave. Tammy and I quickly finished packing and got ready to go. We paid our bill and loaded up.  We took a few pictures before we left. We had to drive all the way back to Windhoek that day. It was a long bumpy ride on the dirt/rock/sand road.  We stopped for lunch/snack at Solitaire. We weren’t really hungry so Tammy and I split a chocolate croissant, which was delicious. We all enjoyed using the internet because it did not work well at the Elegant Desert Lodge. We then hopped back in for another 3.5 hours or something like that. Kelvin and Sandra went straight to the Trans Kalahari Inn, but Tammy’s parents, Tammy, and I went to get lunch. We drove into Windhoek and looked around. Tammy was looking up options on her phone. We got up at 4:30 to get ready. We picked up our lunches from the main building. The same woman who checked us in at 4pm a was serving dinner until at least 9pm was also passing out lunches at 5am! Tammy’s parents, Kelvin, Sandra, Tammy, and I all piled into our vehicle to drive 45 minutes to the hot air balloon place. It was super dark and we could see many stars. When we arrived, we were all half asleep. They had coffee, tea, health shots, and crunchies (South African cookie bar made with oats) for us to eat while we waited. It was chilly, but we were okay in our down jackets. We met our pilot Ivo, and listened to the instructions. We went to the bathroom and got into the bus that would drive us to the launch site. There were 12 passengers per balloon and 4 balloons. Ten people fit into each shuttle bus. It sounded like a math problem!
